The little tadpoles are looking for their mother ( Chinese 小 蝌蚪 找 妈妈 , Pinyin Xiǎo kēdǒu zhǎo māma , English “Little tadpoles looking for their mother” aka “Tadpoles Searching for Mother” aka “Where Is Mother” ) or Where is Mama? is an approximately fifteen-minute Chinese cartoon from 1960. It is about the adventures and misadventures of a group of just hatched tadpoles in search of their mother. In doing so, they encounter different animals that they mistakenly believe to be.
It was produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio under the artistic direction of Te Wei ( 特 伟 ). The technical director was Qian Jiajun ( 钱 家骏 ).
It is one of the first attempts by Te Weis to break away from the animation of the Western style with a style influenced by traditional ink painting - especially by the painter Qi Baishi - and to remain more in harmony with the native Chinese aesthetic.
Because of its simple plot and repetitive passages of text, it is ideal for children who are starting to learn the Chinese language and writing.
