The bewitched princess

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The enchanted princess is a fairy tale ( AaTh 554). It is in Ludwig Bechstein's German book of fairy tales in position 5 (1845 No. 6).

Contents (based on the 1857 edition)

A poor workman tries in vain to collect debts and hears from the bewitched princess. If you solve three tasks, you get it and the kingdom. He's going to send his wicked son Helmerich there. On the way, he lets his horse crush an anthill, kills ducks and destroys a beehive. The tasks are to collect a barrel of linseed from the meadow, to get twelve gold keys from the pond, but he doesn't even try. Finally, he should choose the princess from three veiled figures. He chooses wrongly, it is a dragon that is throwing him out the window. After a year his good brother Hans, who is thought to be stupid, also leaves. He helps the animals. The ants then read the seeds for him, the ducks fetch the keys from the pond, the bees hum around the princess. She will be redeemed.

origin

Bechstein gave oral tradition in 1845 and compared Grimm's The White Snake , but edited it in 1853 based on Grimm's The Queen Bee . According to Hans-Jörg Uther , the template is unclear, perhaps Wilhelmine Mylius . The craftsman hears from the princess through the tavern door, similar to Bechstein's The Courageous Flute Player or The Three Musicians , followed by a stupid tale, such as the tailor Hänschen and the knowing animals , The hospitable calf's head . The saying “Hurry with a while” is reminiscent of Grimm's Der Nagel .
