German fairy tale book
German Fairy Tale Book is the title of a fairy tale collection by Ludwig Bechstein , which appeared from 1845 to 1857. From the 12th edition of 1853 it appeared illustrated as Ludwig Bechstein's fairy tale book . From 1856 onwards, Bechstein's New German Book of Fairy Tales also appeared .
Bechstein's preface to the 1845 edition delimits the terms fairy tale , saga , legend and myth , the latter of which he excluded from this collection. He found his sources in old writings and oral tradition, but also accepted help in revising them. In the first edition of 1845, the fairy tales were provided with brief introductory notes on their origin. The order was later changed and some texts were replaced.

No. 34 Little Tom Thumb , No. 70 The fairy tale of the Knight Bluebeard go back to Charles Perrault .
