Man and woman in a vinegar jug

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Man and woman in a vinegar jug is a fairy tale ( AaTh 555). It is in Ludwig Bechstein's German Fairy Tale Book at position 55 (1845 No. 42) and comes from August Stöber's Elsässisches Volksbüchlein from 1842.

content

A couple argue why they live in a vinegar jug for so long. A golden bird lets them out, gives them a house and garden, and a saying that they can call out: “Golden birds in the sunbeam! / Golden birds in the demant room! / Golden birds everywhere! ”Soon they are dissatisfied, want to be farmers, then townspeople, then nobles, and finally a royal couple. The little bird fulfills everything for them, but notices that they are never satisfied. When the woman wants to be God, a black bird comes and sends her back to the vinegar jar forever.

origin

The little bird just winks, the black bird's eyes sparkle, roll like wheels of fire. The text is "a lesson for those who can never get enough." Bechstein translated it from Stöber's Elsässisches Volksbüchlein into standard German. The vinegar jug fits the sour-headed attitude of the two and immediately results in a disinterested - or sought-after folk-poetic tone. One could even associate it with the fall of man through the apples fermented in it . Morality with angel and hell bird is meant seriously. The model seems to be Runge's Vom Fischer and his wife , to misogynists, cf. also Bechstein's Vom Zornbraten .

theatre

The fairy tale was performed as an opera by Joachim-Dietrich Link and Herta Greeff , which was shown on television in 1956, and also as a puppet show.
