The kitten and the knitting needles is a fairy tale . It is in Ludwig Bechstein's German book of fairy tales at position 37 (1845 No. 52).

A poor woman fetches wood and finds a sick kitten. She wears it home in her apron, doesn't give it to the children either, but lays it soft and gives him milk. The cat gets well and is suddenly gone. When the woman fetches wood again, a fine lady stands there, waves her over and throws five knitting needles into her apron. The woman is surprised, but every night they knit a pair of stockings for her.

Bechstein notes “Oral, Saaltal.” According to Hans-Jörg Uther , the source can not be determined, who also does not name a fairy tale type, just Mot. B422, B505, D810: Magic gift as a gift from the otherworldly for compassionate behavior. The shoemakers in Grimm's Die Wichtelmänner are somewhat similar .
