Thief pond

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The thief pond is a former pond in the area of the Hamburg district Altona-Nord . The approximately 1.9  hectare large body of water with a length of around 180 meters and a width of 110 meters was located directly west of the Pinneberger Chaussee (today Kieler Straße), which made a detour because of it, which still exists, and was flowed through by the Isebek . This flowed into the northwest corner of the pond and left it on its east side.

At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a storage facility for the Hamburg ice works including a water collection basin on the south side of the pond.

In 1912 the Isebek was piped or filled in. Around the rest of the thief's pond was the Luna Park , an amusement park that opened in 1913 and had to close again in 1914 because of the First World War. A second opening in 1925 led to bankruptcy and leveling of the site just a year later. An employment office (Kieler Straße 39) was built on the former southern lake area in 1926/27, and later a sports field on the northern part.

The names of the Hamburg Diebsteich train station about 550 meters to the northwest, the Diebsteich cemetery west of the train station and the street “Am Diebsteich” on the south side of the cemetery and therefore not at the point of the pond remind of the pond.
