Diego José Navarro García de Valladares
Diego José Navarro García de Valladares (* 1708 ; † 1784 ) was captain general of Cuba from 1771 and from 1777 to 1782 .
Life
Diego José Navarro García de Valladares was Field Marshal in the Spanish Colonial Army. During the Seven Years' War the British colonial army occupied Havana from 1762 to 1763.
Through sites called government subsidies Cuba experienced a significant increase in population in the 1770s. There was a naval program and 12,000 additional soldiers. Food was delivered to Cuba from the USA.
Diego José Navarro García de Valladares wrote a letter to George Washington on March 11, 1778 , in which he offered direct trade relations with Cuba. The letter brought Juan de Miralles , Charles III. sent from Spain to the Continental Congress to observe the new American administration. Juan de Miralles met Washington at a Christmas party in what was then the capital, Philadelphia .
