Master of Astorga: Michael's Altar, around 1530

The Master of Astorga or Astorga Master ( Spanish Maestro de Astorga ) is an unknown Spanish Gothic painter who was active in the region around León at the beginning of the 16th century . It got its emergency name from an altarpiece that he created for a church in Astorga . The master's style unites main currents of international Gothic with influences from local Spanish art, but also shows the influence of the Italian Renaissance . With his work, the master shows the beginning of the Renaissance in the art of the Kingdom of León . His style is comparable to that of his contemporary, also known only by the emergency name, the Master of Budapest .
