from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Juan Velázquez Tlacotzin († 1526 in Nochixtlán) was Cihuacóatl and Tlatoani of Tenochtitlan .

Tlacotzin was a member of the old ruling family of Tenochtitlan founded by Acamapichtli († 1391) , son of Texcalteuctli and grandson of Tlacaélel I († 1487) and thus great-nephew of Motēcuhzōma Ilhuicamīna . He was later given the name Juan Velázquez .

Tlacotzin held the inheritance of a Cihuacóatl in Tenochtitlan since 1520, i.e. in pre-colonial times. He took part in the defensive battle for Tenochtitlan, which was carried out with complete sacrifice, and was seized with Cuauhtémoc on August 13, 1521 on Lake Texcoco and then tortured in order to reveal the hiding place of the gold from Technotitlan. Also together with Cuauhtémoc , he accompanied Cortés on his campaign to Honduras . After the execution of Cuauhtémocs on February 28, 1525, Cortés , contrary to the election practices of the Mexica , put Tlacotzin as Tlatoani of Tenochtitlan. However, he died due to illness on the return journey of the expedition.
