history

In 1910, the Swedish electrical machine manufacturer Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget (ASEA) decided to build diesel-electric traction vehicles in the future. For this purpose, ASEA worked together with AB ATLAS-Diesel . As a patent holder, this company had developed diesel engines into a reliable and economical drive.

Statens Järnvägar (SJ) acquired two railcars in 1912 . Additional vehicles were built for demonstration purposes. Based on their experience in prototype production, ASEA and ATLAS founded Diesel Elektriska Vagn Aktiebolaget (DEVA) in 1914 in order to market their vehicles uniformly.

From 1920 DEVA offered a type range with locomotives and railcars. The electrical equipment of the vehicles was carried out by ASEA, the motors for this was provided ATLAS, to control the of was Harry Ward Leonard developed Leonardsystem used.

The locomotives were all equipped with four-stroke diesel engines with compressed air injection, which were started with compressed air . The exhaust system and radiator were arranged on the roof, with the radiator installed in a skylight-like structure. Multi-axle vehicles received chassis with steering axles . The car bodies were planked with sheet metal or teak . A driver's cab was installed at each end of the vehicle . These were given transitions to enable passage to carried cars.

Since the ATLAS engines were not developed further, sales fell from the end of the 1920s. Although Danish two-stroke diesel engines from Burmeister & Wain were used as replacements , DEVA had to cease production in 1939 after around 50 vehicles had been delivered.

Received vehicles

Some of the vehicles are still preserved today and some can be used on museum railways. These include the Lollandsbanen (LJ) M 1 (DEVA 16/1921) diesel locomotive belonging to the Dansk Jernbane-Klub (DJK) and the ML 1 diesel locomotive belonging to the Helsingør – Hornbæk – Gilleleje Banen (HHGB) belonging to the Nordsjællands Veterantog (NSjV ) , DEVA 17/1921, (stored in the Gedser Remise railway museum ).
