Dieter Jocham

Dieter Jocham (* 1949 in Augsburg ) is a German urologist . He lives and works in Lübeck and has been head of the Urology Clinic at the Medical Faculty of the University of Lübeck since 1990 .

At the end of the 1970s, Jocham played a key role in the experimental development of ESWL (extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy), a method for the non-invasive treatment of kidney stones that was established in the 1980s .

Life

After graduating from the Christopherus-Gymnasium Altensteig , Jocham began studying medicine at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich in 1968 . In 1974 he passed the state examination with the grade "very good" and became a medical assistant at the Rotkreuz Hospital in Munich. 1975 followed with the license to practice the doctorate with the grade "magna cum laude".

Jocham's professional career begins as a research assistant at the Munich hospitals in Munich-Schwabing and the Rotkreuz Hospital . As part of his specialist training (1977–1981), Jocham devotes himself to the development of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) at the Urological Clinic of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (headed by Egbert Schmiedt ) the management of the clinic's own cytological laboratory. 1984 followed the habilitation, which in 1985 went hand in hand with the granting of the license to teach and the management of a clinic's own department for ESWL, endourology and computer-aided data processing.

In 1987 he was appointed professor at the LMU Munich , in 1988 he was appointed senior physician and in 1990 he was appointed to the University of Lübeck. There he took over the management of the Clinic for Urology, first becoming vice dean and in 2000 dean of the medical faculty. From 2003 to 2007 he was on the board of directors for research and teaching at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein . With the experimental development of the ESWL, its further development and its clinical application, Jocham is one of the pioneers in the field of non-invasive treatment methods for kidney stones. At that time Christian Chaussy , Ferdinand Eisenberger and the physicist Bernd Forssmann (Dornier) were also significantly involved in the development . The EWSL came to a standard method through the research work of German urologists in the 1980s, in which the kidney stone is broken by high-intensity shock waves in order to avoid invasive removal.

Another area of ​​Jocham's research is photodynamic laser therapy, a laser-assisted treatment that uses photosensitive substances to treat bladder cancer . From 1987 to 1995 he coordinated the joint study "Photodynamic Laser Therapy" with the participation of the universities of LMU Munich, TU rechts der Isar, Düsseldorf, Heidelberg, Lübeck and Bremen. Until 1995, the group investigated the clinical validation of the laser method. Jocham's more recent research is devoted to the development of an artificial urinary bladder. His research is documented in almost 200 scientific publications.
