Dieter Steiner

Dieter Steiner (born September 21, 1932 in Menziken ) is a Swiss geographer and human ecologist .

Life

From 1952 Steiner studied geography, geology, mathematics, zoology, botany and anthropology at the University of Zurich . In 1957 he received the diploma for the higher teaching post and in 1960 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1961 he completed additional training in aerial photo interpretation at the International Training Center for Aerial Survey (ITC) in Delft, Netherlands, and in 1963 he attended the Summer School in Modern Cartography, University of Washington, Seattle, USA.

From 1955 to 1962 he was a library and research assistant at the Geographical Institute of the University of Zurich, and from 1963 to 1964 an instructor at the Department of Geography, University of Chicago . From 1964 he was assistant professor and associate professor at the Institute of Geography at the University of Zurich and in 1968 he was appointed associate and full professor at the Department of Geography, University of Waterloo , Ontario, Canada.

From 1975 to 1998 he was full professor for quantitative geography, later also for human ecology , at the Institute of Geography at ETH Zurich . Steiner retired in 1998 . Since 1989 he has been a full member of the Academia Europaea .

Steiner's fields of work are remote sensing , in particular questions of the recognizability of agricultural use on aerial and satellite images, the applicability of quantitative methods in the field of geographic research. Computer cartography , pattern recognition , GIS and human ecology are other research priorities of Steiner.
