Diexi earthquake of 1933
The Diexi earthquake of 1933 ( Chinese 叠 溪 大 地震 , Pinyin Diexi da dizhen ), also known as the earthquake in Mao County ( 茂县 大 地震 , Mao xian da dizhen ), occurred on August 25, 1933 in Diexi 叠 溪 , today Mao County , Ngawa Governorate (Aba), in southwest China's Sichuan Province . It had a magnitude M of 7.5.
The earthquake destroyed Diexi and the surrounding towns in the southeast. It caused a lot of landslides. Over 9,000 people were killed. The old place sank in the Diexi Lake created by the landslide in the Min Jiang River .
The epicenter was less than 100 km from that of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake and was also caused by the Longmenshan Fault on the edge of the Sichuan Basin .
