List of earthquakes in China
The list of earthquakes in China illustrates the impact that earthquakes have had in the long history of this region. In the densely populated provinces of China, earthquakes repeatedly caused devastating damage, including the Shaanxi earthquake in 1556, the one with the highest number of deaths known worldwide. The equally numerous earthquakes in Taiwan are not listed .
overview
China is a land of earthquakes. Plate tectonic processes put the earth's crust under tension and repeatedly cause great damage with thousands of deaths: the collision of the Indian plate with the Eurasian in the southwest and west, which raises the Himalayas, and the Pacific earthquake belt in front of the entire west side.
The earthquakes in China are very common in certain areas. These earthquake areas are divided into five earthquake provinces with a total of 23 earthquake belts:
- East: Taiwan and the surrounding sea
- Southwest: Tibet , West Sichuan and West Yunnan
- Northwest: Gansu , Hexi Corridor , Qinghai , Ningxia and Tianshan
- North: Taihangshan with the rivers Fen He and Wei He , Yin Shan , Yan Shan , Shandong and Bohai Bay
- Southeast: coastal zone, for example near Guangdong or Fujian
Reports of earthquakes can be found in many ancient Chinese scriptures. The oldest known mention of an earthquake can be found in the Bamboo Annals ( Records on the Bamboo Book v) from the 23rd century. The Zhongguo dizhen lishi ziliao huibian , a collection of historical earthquakes from the 1980s, lists about 40,000 earthquakes, of which more than 15,000 caused losses. More than 3000 earthquakes with magnitudes over 5 have occurred in China since 1973.

T = depth of the earthquake center in km
M = magnitude
Q = source of information
The underground nuclear tests that took place more frequently in the 1990s - mainly in Sichuan - generated earthquakes with magnitudes of over 5. They were also recorded worldwide, but are not listed here.
