The earthquake in Haiyuan 1920 ( Chinese  海 源 大 地震 , Pinyin Hǎiyuán dà dìzhèn ) or earthquake in Gansu 1920 occurred on December 16, 1920 in Haiyuan County in the Chinese province of Ningxia . More than 200,000 people died in the process. In terms of the number of victims, it ranks seventh worldwide. The epicenter was at 36 ° 30 '  N , 105 ° 42'  O .

The earthquake is also known as the Gansu earthquake because Ningxia and thus Haiyuan were still part of Gansu Province at that time . It occurred at 20:06:53 local time with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale . Aftershocks were reported for another three years. In the center of the quake in the Lijunbu -Haiyuan- Ganyanchi area there was total destruction (maximum intensity XII on the Mercalli scale ).

There were 73,000 dead in Haiyuan County and 30,000 in Guyuan County alone. The place Sujiahe in circles Xiji was buried by a landslide. Almost all houses were destroyed in Longde and Huining , and major damage also occurred in Lanzhou , Taiyuan , Xi'an , Xining and Yinchuan . From Lijunbu to Ganyanchi to Jingtai , an almost 200 km long zone of surface faults was observed, numerous landslides were reported, rivers were dammed or changed their course, and crevasses appeared in the area of ​​the quake center. The quake was felt from the Yellow Sea in the east to Qinghai in the west and from Inner Mongolia in the north to Sichuan in the south. Seiches associated with this quake have been observed in some lakes and fjords in Norway .
