The independent city of Aksu ( Chinese  阿克苏 市 , Pinyin Ākèsū Shì ; Uighur ئاقسۇ شەھىرى Aⱪsu Xəⱨiri ) is the capital of the Aksu administrative district in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China . The administrative area of ​​the city officially has an area of ​​14,668 km² (the city government, however, states 18,264 km² on its website), of which the urban settlement (inner city) only makes up 27 km². At the end of 2003 the population had reached around 570,000. Aksu is located between the Taklamakan Desert in the south and the Tian Shan Mountains in the north on an arm of the Silk Road .

Aksu is Turkish and means white water when translated . It is a technical term that indicates the origin of a river. The name Aksu was first used for this city in the 14th century. Several rivers are also called Aksu, e.g. B. the river flowing from Tienshan .

environmental issues

Aksu is grappling with massive air pollution. In March 2016, according to the Chinese website aqicn.org, together with the western Chinese cities of Korla and Kashgar , the air in the village had the worst possible value. During the ongoing measurement, the limit values ​​for ozone , fine dust (PM 10 and PM 2.5 ), nitrogen dioxide , sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide are regularly exceeded.
