Lashio ( Burmese လားရှိုးမြို့ , BGN / PCGN : lazhomyo; Shan : လႃႈ သဵဝ်ႈ ) is the largest city in northern Shan State , Myanmar, on a mountain foothill above the valley of the Nam-Yao River northeast of Mandalay . The city is the terminus of the Mandalay-Lashio railway line. Lashio is the administrative center of Lashio District .
The population is made up of Shan , Burmese and numerous Chinese .
The city used to be the seat of a Shan prince ( sao pha ). The city played an important role in the fight against the Japanese in the Second Sino-Japanese War . The city was the starting point of the so-called " Burma Road ", via which Chang Kai Shek was supplied with food and weapons. In 1988 a fire destroyed most of the wooden houses.
Lashio is the seat of a Roman Catholic bishop .
