The Hibernia 41-E and 42-E were steam locomotives from Hibernia AG . While the 42-E locomotive was scrapped, the 41-E has been preserved and was a monument and eye-catcher in front of the Starlight Express Theater in Bochum until November 2015 . On November 9, 2015, the 41-E was exchanged for a freshly refurbished Prussian T9 1 from the year of construction 1893 and is again in the Bochum Railway Museum .

history

In 1942, Hibernia AG bought three Henschel locomotives for their factory railways . The procurement of these locomotives in the middle of the Second World War became possible because the order was classified as "war important". The Hibernia made synthetic gasoline from coal . In addition to the two locomotives with five coupled wheel sets , this order also included a four-coupled locomotive. Since the locomotives were used on the track network of the former Bergwerks-AG Recklinghausen , the former were given company numbers 30 and 31 according to their scheme, which were changed to 41-E and 42-E in 1953 as part of the standardization of the company numbers.

The 42-E was parked around 1970 and scrapped soon after; on the other hand, the 41-E could be retained after it was shut down at the end of 1971. The mine administration, now renamed Bergbau AG Herne / Recklinghausen , which had last used the locomotive at the General Blumenthal mine in Recklinghausen, sold it to the Bochum-Dahlhausen Railway Museum. Because the investigation period had already expired, the locomotive - like some of the other vehicles in the museum - could not be used on loan on works railways in the Ruhr area during the 1973 oil crisis .

Hibernia 41-E in front of the Starlight Express Theater in Bochum

For the premiere of the musical Starlight Express in Bochum, the locomotive was set up briefly in front of the newly built theater in 1988 as an eye-catcher, but then initially exhibited again in the railway museum. For the 5000th performance of the musical, the locomotive was again loaned to the Starlight Express Theater in the summer of 2000 and was to be presented on the forecourt for three years together with a former construction wagon. The return of the locomotive to the railway museum did not take place, however, and it advertised the musical until November 2015.

technology

It is standard gauge , ten-coupled two-cylinder steam - tank locomotives ; the designation is therefore E h2t . The locomotives are similar to the Henschel type E800, but differ from it in a few details. The design is therefore also referred to as the Bochum type.

Due to the war time, the desired copper fire box could not be made, the locomotives received one made of steel.

In 1956, as part of a general inspection, a conversion took place, the locomotives received roller bearings and a Henschel type mixer preheater . The previously existing vapor barrier was also replaced by a compressed air brake.
