DigiCert Inc. is an American provider of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates . It is used by around 8.0% of all websites, including Facebook and Twitter . In the German-speaking area, large sites such as bild.de , Spiegel Online and 20min.ch use DigiCert certificates. The company was founded in 2003 by Ken Bretschneider and is based in Lehi , Utah . On August 2, 2017, DigiCert announced the acquisition of the website security and PKI offerings from its previous competitor Symantec . This essentially concerns the SSL encryption division acquired by Symantec in 2010 from the US company Verisign . DigiCert pays $ 950 million upfront according to the acquisition agreement. In addition, Symantec will receive a 30 percent stake in DigiCert upon completion of the transaction.
