The Dikwillem ( Afrikaans ) or Dicker Wilhelm ( German ), also known as Garub Mountain , is a prominent mountain in Namibia that is clearly visible from all directions and is 1496 m (or 1473 m ) high .
The mountain is located around 15 kilometers north of the B4 national road and around 80 kilometers east of the city of Lüderitz in the Namib desert . Its surroundings are home to the desert horses . They are the descendants of officer horses from colonial times. The horses have adapted to the harsh conditions of the desert landscape, which is unique in the world.
During the German colonial era , the Schutztruppe operated a heliograph station on the mountain .
