Between 1998 and 2006 Nikolow was managing director of the Bulgarian confectionery manufacturer Pobeda .

As chairman of the GERB party for the Burgas region, he was elected in 2007 as a candidate for the Christian-Democratic and conservative forces for the mayoral election on October 28, 2007. In the runoff election on November 4, 2007, Nikolov was able to prevail against Valeri Simeonow, candidate of the nationalist coalition Ataka , with 62.37%.

With his victory Nikolov replaced the "long-time ruling mayor of Bulgaria", Joan Kostadinov . He names education policy, European integration and the fight against illegal construction sites as the priorities of his first mandate.

For the local elections in 2011, Nikolov was again nominated as a candidate for mayor by his party. On September 20 of the same year all conservative parties ( Blue Coalition , Gergjowden Movement , Coalition ODS and BND) announced in Burgas that they would support Nikolov's candidacy for another mandate and not submit their own candidates for mayor. He was then re-elected with over 70 percent in office.
