Dimitrios Axourgos (born May 4, 1983 in Ioannina , Greece ) is a German SPD politician and has been the full-time mayor of the city of Schwerte in the Unna district in North Rhine-Westphalia since March 14, 2018 .

Life

Dimitrios Axourgos was born the son of a worker and a worker in Ioannina, Greece, in the Epirus region. At the age of five, his family moved with him to Germany. Together with his parents and a younger brother, he grew up in Iserlohn in the Märkisches Kreis , where he graduated from the Märkisches Gymnasium in 2002 . Dimitrios Axourgos studied history and social sciences at the Ruhr University Bochum with a Master of Education degree (M.Ed.). During this time he was employed as a student or research assistant at the historical institutes of the Ruhr University Bochum and the Distance University in Hagen . His focus was on medieval history. He also worked for Dagmar Freitag , a member of the Bundestag .

After graduating, Dimitrios Axourgos completed his legal clerkship at the Letmathe high school in Iserlohn and passed the second state examination. From 2010 until his election as mayor in 2018, he was employed as a teacher at the Friedrich-Bährens-Gymnasium in Schwerte.

Dimitrios Axourgos was a football referee for many years in the Football and Athletics Association of Westphalia and is a member of the AWO , the GEW and numerous other clubs.

Political career

Dimitrios Axourgos was already active as a teenager in the newly founded children's and youth parliament of the city of Iserlohn. He has been a member of the SPD since 2001. From 2001 to 2004 Dimitrios Axourgos was chairman of the Jusos Iserlohn. At the age of 21, he was elected to the Iserlohn City Council for the first time, to which he belonged continuously until 2018 for the constituency of Kalthof, Leckingsen and Refflingsen. In the city council he was, among other things, chairman of the SPD parliamentary group and chairman of the sports committee. At the same time he was also the deputy chairman of the Iserlohn City Sports Association.

As deputy sub-district chairman and European Commissioner, Dimitrios Axourgos was a board member in the SPD sub-district Märkischer Kreis from 2006 to 2018. From 2011 to 2014 he was also chairman of the SPD city association Iserlohn.

In 2009 and 2014 Dimitrios Axourgos ran for the European elections .

In addition, Dimitrios Axourgos was a member of the SPD working group on migration and diversity as deputy federal chairman until 2019.

In the mayoral election in Schwerte on March 4, 2018, Dimitrios Axourgos was elected mayor with 56.63% of the vote. He prevailed against five other applicants, including a joint candidate from the CDU, Greens and FDP. Dimitrios Axourgos is Germany's first Greek mayor.

Awards

For his many years of voluntary work as a council member for the citizens of Iserlohn and his extraordinary services, Dimitrios Axourgos was awarded the honorary award of the city of Iserlohn, the Pankratius plaque, by Iserlohn's then mayor Peter Paul Ahrens on May 29, 2018 .
