Tufa formation in Dimmuborgir

In Dimmuborgir [ ˌtɪ.mʏpɔːr.jɪr̥ ] ( isl. Dark cities or dark castles ) is a lava field and the remains of a lava lake east of Lake Myvatn in Iceland . It is located in a volcanically active region in the area of the Krafla volcanic system , directly east of the lake. Adjacent to the northeast is the Hverfjall tuff ring .

The bizarre stone formations of the lava field are reminiscent of the ruined ruins of castles and towers. In Icelandic mythology , Dimmuborgir is seen as the shelter of elves and trolls .

geology

Dimmuborgir consists of a collapsed lava lake, whose lava belongs to the larger lava field of the so-called Younger Láxálaves . It stems from an eruption of the Þrengslaborgir and Lúdentsborgir crater series to the east 2300 years ago. According to petrological analysis, the rows of craters do not belong to the Krafla, but to another smaller volcanic system. It's called Heiðarsporðar and is east of the Krafla system.

At Dimmuborgir, the lava collected over a swamp or lake. As the lava flowed over the wet ground, the water in it began to boil and the water vapor rose to the surface through chimneys with a diameter of up to several meters. After the crust of the lava cover solidified, liquid lava still flowed below the crust in the direction of Lake Mývatn . The crust collapsed, but the chimneys and parts of the collapsed lava blanket were preserved. Based on the height of the chimneys, the depth of the lava lake can be determined to be about 10 meters.

Trivia

The black / dark metal band Dimmu Borgir named themselves after the lava formation.
