Dimnos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dimnos († 330 BC ), called Limnos by the Roman biographer Plutarch , was a soldier of the Macedonian king Alexander the Great , on whom he wanted to carry out an assassination attempt .

Dimnos came from Chalastra and is known as the hetairos (companion) of the king during the Asian campaign . In 330 BC BC he planned an assassination attempt on Alexander in Phrada (today Farah ) together with several like-minded people. Among the Alexander historians , only Curtius Rufus stated that Dimnos was not the initiator of the conspiracy. Dimnos also let his lover Nicomachus in on the plan, but his brother Kebalinos reported this to the general Philotas . However, after the latter remained inactive, Kebalinos gained access to the king with the help of a page, to whom he reported directly and named the names of all the conspirators. These, including the bodyguard Demetrios , were immediately sentenced to death and executed.

Dimnos, on the other hand, is said to have committed suicide in his arrest, but according to Plutarch he was murdered in his dungeon. The exact motives for the conspiracy remain anonymous.

The failed assassination attempt drew wide circles, including Alexander's closest circle of friends. Because the general Philotas had failed to report this to the king, he was accused of participating in the conspiracy, although his name was not mentioned by Kebalinos. Philotas was still condemned and executed . As a further consequence, Alexander also ordered his father, the general Parmenion , to be executed .
