Dina Halpern
Dina Halpern (born July 15, 1909 in Warsaw , † February 17, 1989 in Chicago ) was a Polish actress of the Yiddish theater and film.
Life
Halpern began her career as a dancer in the Jewish Art Theater in Warsaw. She was best known for her roles in pre-war Jewish films and plays in Yiddish. Her family was killed in the Treblinka extermination camp . After the war she made guest appearances in England, France, Israel, Argentina and Australia. From 1948 she lived in Chicago, where she played very successfully in Jewish theaters. She was the niece of actress Esther Rachel Kamińska .
Honors
- In 1985, Bar Ilan University in Israel founded the Dina Halpern Institute for Jewish Performing Arts .
- In 1988 she received the Manger Prize for Yiddish Literature.
