The Dybbuk (original title Yiddish Der Dibuk, דער דיבוק, Polish Dybuk ) is a Polish film drama in Yiddish by the director Michał Waszyński from 1937 .
action
The drama takes place in the milieu of small Jewish towns ( shtetl ) in Poland around 1880. The fathers-to-be, Sender and Nissn, agree to marry their children, provided that it is a girl and a boy. When Sender's daughter Leje is born and his friend's son Chonen is born, the appointment seems to come true. But 18 years later, Sender has become rich and wants to give his daughter a rewarding game. Leje and Chonen, whom fate as Talmud students has resulted in station house, fall in love. When the broadcaster recognizes Chonen's origins, he has already promised his daughter to another groom. Chonen dies and his soul takes possession of the beloved Leje. When trying to drive the ghost out, Leje dies too.
background
The literary source of Salomon An-ski is based on a Jewish popular belief about the dibbuk ; an often evil spirit of the dead that enters the body of a living person. The film was shot in Kazimierz Dolny , in Opole Lubelskie and in Warsaw studios. The first performance was on September 26, 1937 in Warsaw.
The Warsaw professor Majer Balaban was involved in the production as a film advisor.
criticism
“The gloomy, dignified and melancholy DIBEK is the atmospherically densest and most 'artistic' of the Yiddish sound films. From the initial image of a candle-lit synagogue to the eerie dances at the unfinished wedding celebration to the climax of the exorcism, the film is steeped in religion and ritual - as well as superstition and the supernatural.
