Leon Liebgold

Leon Liebgold (born July 31, 1910 in Krakow , † September 3, 1993 in New Hope , Pennsylvania ) was a Polish actor of Jewish origin.

Life

Leon Liebgold was born as the son of the actor couple Solomon Liebgold and Basia Liebgold . He began his career in the Yiddish theater in Poland, where he also met his wife Lili Liliana . After shooting the film The Dybbuk , he and his wife went on a world tour with the cabaret group "Di yidishe bande" in 1937. The two stayed in the United States of America after the outbreak of World War II . While his wife in theaters in Detroit and Chicago played, Leon Liebgold served in the US Army in the12th Armored Division in Europe as a sergeant . At the end of the war in 1945, Leon Liebgold managed to find his brother Jan Liebgold ("Yonek") , who had remained in Poland , and to enable him to enter the USA.

After the war he played for many years in various Yiddish theaters in the USA, including the Folksbiene Theater . In the late 1970s he was President of the Hebrew Actors' Union in Manhattan .

Leon Liebgold is buried next to his wife in Mount Hebron Cemetery in Flushing , Queens .
