The MÁV series M43 is a diesel-hydraulic locomotive of the Hungarian State Railways . The shunting locomotive was manufactured in Romania from 1974 in order to assemble passenger trains at Hungarian stations .
The M43 has a diesel engine with an output of 331 kW. Since this was not sufficient for shunting in freight yards, a locomotive based on the M43, the MÁV series M47.2 , was put into service. With the exception of the motor, which in the M47.2 can generate up to 700 kW, the two series are identical and can only be distinguished from the outside by the series designation.
In addition to being used by the MÁV, identical machines are still in use today by numerous private railway companies, especially in Romania. The Styrian state railways are also in possession of an M43.
