Dinochelus ausubeli is a species of decapod from the monotypic genus Dinochelus described in 2010. The holotype was discovered during the project " Census of Marine Life " in 2007 in the Pacific near the Philippines ( 15 ° 56'N, 121 ° 45'E ).

description

The specimen of Dinochelus ausubeli discovered at a depth of 250 m has a carapace length of 31 mm. The color is transparent-white throughout, the scissors and antennae are reddish-pink. There are many reddish-pink spots on the pleon . The carapace appears blurred in the center, reddish-pink.

The rostrum is triangular in shape and has three forward and upward (anterodorsal) points. The carapace is speckled with small spines (spinules), otherwise finely granulated to smooth. The pleon is strongly depressed, smooth on the back. The telson is almost square, with a slightly granulated surface.

On the first pair of striding legs , the scissors are clearly unequal and different. The scissor fingers ( Dactylus and Propodus) are about four times as long as the palm of the scissors in the larger scissors; the inward-pointing spines of the scissor fingers interlock when the scissors are closed. In contrast to the larger scissors, the smaller scissors also have outward-pointing spikes on the scissor fingers. There are also very small scissors on the second, third and fifth pair of striding legs.

The eyes of Dinochelus ausubeli are fully developed and mobile; the cornea is present.

Systematics and taxonomy

The generic name Dinochelus is made up of ancient Greek δεινός deinós 'terrible', 'huge' and χηλή chela 'scissors' and refers to the strikingly large scissors. The specific epithet was chosen in honor of Jesse H. Ausubel , a co-founder of the Census of Marine Life project .

Dinochelus is a sister taxon of the genera Thaumastocheles and Thaumastochelopsis , which form a monophyletic group within the lobster-like group. These are sometimes set up as an independent family (Thaumastochelidea). The group will u. a. defined by the strong inequality of the scissors on the first pair of striding legs. You can distinguish Dinochelus ausubeli from species of Thaumastocheles and Thaumastochelopsis primarily through two diverging, narrow rows of spines on the occlusal surface of the scissor fingers of the larger scissors. In Thaumastocheles and Thaumastochelopsis either only one row can be found or three-sided teeth are present. Furthermore, Dinochelus have a T-shaped epistome .
