from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Diocese of Eastern America and New York ( English Diocese of Eastern America and New York , Russian Восточно-Американская и Нью-Йоркская епархия , Wostotschno-Amerikanskaja i Nju-Jorkskaja jeparchija ) is a diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad . The bishopric is associated with the rank of First Hierarch .

history

The Russian Church traces the establishment of the diocese back to the arrival of Bishop Vitaly Maximenko in the United States in 1934.

The diocese was established in its current form in 1946. In November of that year clerics and lay representatives of the North American metropolis passed a resolution on the Cleveland Sobor, according to which the contacts with the Moscow Patriarchate and the Synod of ROKA were interrupted. The communities resisted this cut. After the break of communion with the Metropolitan Theophilus Paschkovsky (Ebf. Of San Francisco, Metropolitan of All America and Canada), the ROKA gained a new structure in America and united about 40 parishes from the Metropolitan District . The administration of these parishes was entrusted to Archbishop Vitaly Maksimenko, who was given the title "Archbishop of Eastern America and Jersey City".
