Metropolitan Hilarion ( Russian Митрополит Иларион , baptismal name: Igor Alexejewitsch Kapral , Russian Игорь Алексеевич Капрал ; born January 6, 1948 , Spirit River , Alberta , Canada ) is Bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church of Eastern America and the New Metropolitan Orthodox Church abroad (ROCO) York , first hierarchy of ROCOR (since May 18, 2008); in this capacity he is the first bishop to be called by the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Moscow . He also acts as the ruling bishop of theDiocese of Australia and New Zealand .

On May 17, 2007, by signing the "Act of Canonical Communion" between ROCOR and the Russian Orthodox Church, he automatically became a member of the latter's episcopal community.

His name day is October 21 of the Julian calendar , the feast day of St. Hilarion (schema monk of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra ).

Life

Igor Kapral was born on January 6, 1948 as the youngest child of Alexei and Euphrosynia Kapral in Spirit River and grew up in the vastness of Canada. He had to walk 2.5 miles to school every day and describes his childhood as "pleasant, ... completely free from harmful influences." Further stations in the school career were Blueberry Creek and, for high school, Spirit River.

Since his youth, Igor was enthusiastic about the church, reading books and magazines about religion. At the age of 7 he made the decision to become a priest. During the Orthodox church services in Spirit River, he met Bishop Panteleimon (Rudyk) of Edmonton and adored him deeply. Panteleimon was the first to tell him: “You will be a priest one day”.

In 1966 he found a spiritual leader, Bishop Sava (Saračević) , Bishop of Edmonton.

In 1967 he began his studies at Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary in Jordanville, New York . There he also learned Russian as well as singing in the choir and the altar service . He was involved in the editing of "Orthodox Life" and was also instructed in typesetting Russian types by Hieromonk Ignatius (the printer). When he graduated in 1972, Igor went to Holy Trinity Monastery as a novice . On November 19th jul. / December 2,  1974 greg. he got the tonsure and the name Hilarion.

He received further ordinations on November 21st July. / December 4,  1975 greg. by Archbishop Awerkij (Tauschev) and on Lazarus Saturday 1976 by Bishop Laurus (Škurla) of Manhattan. Representation assignments often took him to Cleveland and Pennsylvania .

On November 27th, July / December 10,  1984 greg. Hilarion was consecrated bishop by the Metropolitan of New York Philaret (Voznesensky) and nine other bishops and called to the diocese of Manhattan, part of which was the supervision of the parishes in Pennsylvania .

In 1995, Bishop Hilarion was called to the episcopal see in Washington, while his New York residence remained.

On June 20, 1996, he was called to the Diocese of Sydney, Australia and New Zealand because of his abilities because the diocese was in trouble at the time. For this he was made archbishop . After the death of Laurus Schkurla , Hilarion was temporarily appointed head of ROCOR and elected on May 12, 2008 and made the new first ruler of ROCOR. On May 14 of the same year, he was recognized by the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Moscow, installed as a primate and elevated to the rank of metropolitan. On May 18, he was enthroned in New York. On December 10, 2008, he became a member of the Preparatory Commission for the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church.
