Hilarion of Kiev

Hilarion or Ilarion ( Russian Иларион , Ukrainian Іларіон , Belarusian Иларион ) was the second metropolitan of Kiev (1051-1054). He was the first metropolitan who did not come from Greece , but was of Slavic origin. He is the first known speaker and writer of the Kievan Rus .

Hilarion is venerated today as a saint in the Russian Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church .,

Life

In 1051 Hilarion was elected Metropolitan of Kiev as the successor to Theopemptus, who died in 1049. In contrast to the previous bishops, he was not appointed by the Patriarch of Constantinople , but elected by an assembly of bishops of Russia, at the request of Yaroslav the Wise . However, it is believed that this was not a break with the patriarchy.

His works are still known today

  • Sermon on justice and grace ( Slovo o zakone i blagodati , before 1052),
  • a creed,
  • a prayer and
  • a collection of instructions for priests.

His works influenced Ukrainian literature and Slavic culture.
