Metropolitan Laurus (secular name Wassili Michajlowitsch Schkurla , Russian Василий Михайлович Шкурла , Slovak Vasiľ Škurla ; *  January 1, 1928 in Ladomirová ( ČSR ); † March 16, 2008 in Jordanville near Warren , New York , USA) was the head of the Russian Orthodox Church abroad .

Life

Born in Russia , he entered the Orthodox monastery of St. Job of Pochayev in his hometown Ladomirová ( Okres Svidník ) in Eastern Slovakia in 1939 . In 1946 the monastery was moved to Jordanville, New York, United States.

In 1947 Laurus took the monk's vows and received the tonsure . On March 19, 1949, he took the name of the martyr Laurus . He was on 14 January 1950 for the monk deacon consecrated on 27 June 1954, his ordination as a monk priest . From 1964 Laurus worked as a lecturer at the seminary of the Trinity Monastery (Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary) in Jordanville, from 1958 as inspector of the seminary. On September 6, 1959, he was raised to the rank of Hegumen and later on April 17, 1966, he was ordained an archimandrite .

Laurus was ordained Bishop of Manhattan on August 13, 1967 and was thus Vicar Bishop of the East American Diocese . He was also abbot of the Holy Trinity Monastery and administrator of the Diocese of Trinity-Syracuse since July 18, 1976 ; from October 12 of the same year - Senior Bishop and Rector of the Trinity Seminary. During this time he was also the editor-in-chief of the magazines "Orthodoxe Rus'", "Orthodoxes Leben" and "Der Orthodoxe Weg".

In 1981 he was raised to the rank of archbishop . He was deputy secretary and secretary of the Synod of Bishops. As of July 10, 2001, he also performed the duties of First Hierarch of ROKA as a deputy . From the Bishops' Council of ROKA he was on 11./24. October 2001 elected First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, Metropolitan of East America and New York . Since then he has headed the Russian Orthodox Church abroad. He was instrumental in restoring canonical unity in the Russian Orthodox Church after its split in 1921. The official reunification took place on May 17, 2007.
