Life

Michael Arndt attended the Helmholtz School in Frankfurt am Main until he graduated from high school . Among other things, he studied Slavic Studies in Heidelberg and converted to the Russian Orthodox faith while still studying in 1964 . After Magisterexamen Arndt was with a thesis on the literature of the Russian principality of Tver Dr. phil. PhD .

Arndt studied Orthodox theology at the University of Belgrade and obtained his theological diploma in 1979 . In 1975 he was ordained a priest monk and in 1980 bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (ROKA) . At the same time, as abbot , he led the monastic community of the monastery of St. Job von Počaev in Munich for decades .

From 1980 Mark Arndt was bishop of Stuttgart and southern Germany , and in 1982 he was appointed bishop of Berlin and Germany . In 1990 he was raised to the rank of archbishop.

He heads the Russian Orthodox Diocese of the Orthodox Bishop of Berlin and Germany , which is part of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad - that's the official title. The eparchy of Great Britain , the congregation in Copenhagen and the “Russian Spiritual Mission” in Jerusalem also fall under his responsibility as bishop in Germany . At the end of the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad in December 2019, its first hierarch, Metropolitan Hilarion , put the white klobuk on him, making him a metropolitan.

After the political changes in the former Eastern Bloc countries , Archbishop Mark campaigned intensively for the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad to unite with the Russian Orthodox Church - Moscow Patriarchate . Mark was the most important negotiating partner on the part of the foreign church. In the whole of Orthodoxy he became known at the latest through his address at the 4th General Council of the Russian Church Abroad in San Francisco , in which he vehemently advocated a merger of the two churches and also admitted "mistakes of his own church".

Archbishop Mark lives in the monastery of St. Job von Počaev in Munich and looks after the faithful of the diocese of Berlin and Germany of the foreign church, which is still in existence for the time being. His journalistic organ is the magazine Der Bote of the German Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad .

Archimandrite Mark has been friends with Archpriest Nikolai Artemoff , who heads the Munich community, for many years . This spent his school days at the same high school.

Metropolitan Mark accused in his letter of 5./18. March 2020 (published on March 19, 2020) on the occasion of the corona crisis, certain groups are responsible for the spread of infections because they would have provoked God's wrath. For this he wrote u. a .:

“Again and again God shows His mercy and his long-suffering with our race. But man did not want to listen to him and did not recognize the extent to which he depends on divine help and grace. Man wanted to replace God with himself when he thoughtlessly meddled in the world - God's creation, and man's nature. By legalizing euthanasia, man already does not want to accept the time of his death determined by God; he does not want to recognize the God-given difference between man and woman, the special calling of each; he is not ready to accept childbearing as a natural phenomenon in his life; he does not allow grain to grow naturally. Is it astonishing that new diseases keep appearing and that there are no longer any remedies for them that would alleviate the fate of the infected? "

- Mark (Arndt)

This statement brought him from the SPD, the FDP, the Greens and others the accusation of being a conspiracy theorist .
