Dionís Bennàssar

Dionís Bennàssar Mulet (born April 3, 1904 in Pollença (Mallorca), † December 12, 1967 ibid) was a Mallorcan painter .

Life

Dionís Bennàssar, born into a peasant family, soon discovered his special passion for drawing. His talent was supported at a young age by his parents, who enabled him to take lessons in drawing and painting at the art school in Palma . At the age of 18 he was drafted into military service. He was seriously wounded in the Rif War in Morocco and returned to Mallorca injured. Due to inadequate wound treatment, his right hand was crippled, but this did not prevent him from continuing to paint. In 1926 he studied with Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa . In 1943 he married Catalina Vicens. In 1945 his son Antonio was born. He died suddenly and unexpectedly on the night of December 12, 1967.

Posthumously

He received numerous posthumous honors in Mallorca, Madrid and Valencia. In 1981 he was appointed Hijo Ilustre de Pollença . In 2008 he was awarded the Medalla d'Or del Consell de Mallorca .

Bennàssar's works are characterized by lively colors and long, loose brushwork. His style absorbs the texture and color of post-impressionism and has moments of glorification.

Perles i nacre is a depiction of the ocean floor in an explosion of light, shadow and color. This large-format work won the Llorenç Cerdà Award .

Museo Dionís Bennàssar

A detailed collection is now in the museum of the Fundación Dionís Bennàssar in Pollença. The museum is located in the former home of the Dionís Bennàssar family and shows visitors not only his works and his studio but also the artist's private living space.
