Dion of Naples
Dion of Naples ( ancient Greek Δίων ) was an ancient Greek mathematician from Naples . His life dates are not known. He is mentioned in the Chronicle of Castor of Rhodes .
Augustine passed on a passage from the lost work De gente populi Romani by Marcus Terentius Varro , which in turn refers to the Chronicle of Castor of Rhodes. There Dion and Adrastus of Kyzikos are named as witnesses for a miraculous sign of the planet Venus and are called well-known (nobiles) mathematicians. That happened at the time of King Ogyges .
In addition, Censorinus reports that Dion determined the length of the Great Year to be 10,884 earth years.
