Dirk Delabastita

Dirk Delabastita (born March 14, 1960 in Leuven , Belgium ) is a Belgian literary and translation scholar . He is the director of the English Institute at the University of Namur , where he also teaches as a professor.

biography

Dirk Delabastita was born on March 14, 1960 in Leuven, Belgium. He lives with his wife Lieve Waer and their three sons Simon, Arnout and Vincent in Blanden, Belgium.

After graduating from Sint-Pieterscollege in 1978, Delabastita studied German philology and teaching English and Dutch at the KU Leuven . He then specialized in literature and literary theory from 1982 to 1983 at the University of Hull (England) . From 1983 to 1988 he was a young researcher at the Institute for Literary Studies at the KU Löwen, where he obtained his doctorate in German philology in 1990. After two years as an assistant at the English Institute of the University of Namur (UNamur), Delabastita taught as an adjunct professor at UNamur in 1991, before receiving the full professorship for English literature and literary theory in 2004. He has been the head of the institute since 2003. He also teaches as an adjunct professor at the Université catholique de Louvain .

Research areas

Dirk Delabastita's main interest is in literary studies and its links with linguistics and translation studies. In addition, he is involved in Shakespeare research and pays special attention to the translation of Shakespeare works and their international reception. In his dissertation, published in 1993, he examined the puns in Shakespeare's Hamlet and the translation problems associated with them . Ambiguity and verbal humor are also among his subjects of investigation. As a member of Pluri-LL, a research group at UNamur, he deals with multilingualism and its effects on intergroup relationships, as well as translation as a space for interaction between languages ​​and cultures. He also researches narrative theory and works as a lexicologist - most recently as co-editor of the Algemeen Letterkundig Lexicon , an online lexicon for technical terms in literature and literary studies.
