Discoelius zonalis is a species from the order of the hymenoptera (Hymenoptera) within the solitary wasps (Eumeninae).

features

The wasps reach a body length of 13 to 15 millimeters (females) or 9 to 15 millimeters (males). The wasps have a black basic color. A distinct yellow cross band runs over the abdomen . The forewings are darkened. The corners of the pronotum are black, which distinguishes Discoelius zonalis from the similar species Discoelius dufourii , which has yellow corners.

Occurrence

The species occurs from France to the south of Scandinavia and east to the Far East. It inhabits light forests, forest edges and bushes. Some of the animals fly in two generations from early May to early September. They are rare in Central Europe.

Way of life

Discoelius zonalis mainly builds their nests in abandoned beetle holes in dead wood, but also in reeds. The cell walls are made from chewed leaf material that is mixed with saliva. Occasionally the other walls of the cell are also lined with this brown mass after it has hardened. The brood is fed with caterpillars of smaller butterflies . The species is parasitized by the golden wasp Chrysis brevitarsis .
