Discourse is an open source software for managing internet forums and mailing lists . Its aim is to achieve a better quality of discussion than in the Internet forums that were common up until then.

history

Discourse was founded in 2013 by Jeff Atwood , Robin Ward and Sam Saffron. Discourse received financial support from venture capital firms First Round Capital , SV Angel and Greylock Partners .

Functions

In terms of user-friendliness , Discourse breaks with existing forum software: It includes features that are otherwise more familiar from social networks than from forums, such as infinite scrolling , live updates, automatic generation of an HTML preview of linked websites ("oneboxing"), as well as drag and drop for attachments. The goals and drive of the project are more of a social than a technical nature: the improved forum software should also improve the quality of the discussion.

technology

Discourse is written in JavaScript and Ruby on Rails and uses Ember.js as a framework. As a database management system is PostgreSQL used. The source code is under the GNU General Public License Version 2.

Business model

Discourse's software is open source ( GPLv2 ) and can be used free of charge. The company generates income from the sales of hosting and support . There are various options available, each of which can be fully tested for 14 days prior to purchase.

Dissemination and use

Discourse is used by more than 600 well-known companies and projects, including:
