Anant Priolkar

Anant Kakba Priolkar ( Marathi अनंत काकबा प्रियोळकर ; 1895 - 1973 ) was an Indian historian , professor, author and researcher.

Life

Priolkar has published over 50 books and over 300 scientific articles since 1920, mostly in Marathi . He was known as a researcher of the Marathi language and literature, the Inquisition in Goa and the history of the printing press in India. He was also a former director of the Marathi Sanshodhan Mandal , a scientific institute for the study of the Marathi language.

The Inquisition in Goa

His main work is his book about the Inquisition in Goa . The book is an extensive account of the Inquisition that took place in Goa between the 16th and 19th centuries.

The book is divided into two parts. The first part, entitled The Inquisition in Goa, is divided into ten chapters. The first two chapters deal with the Spanish Inquisition and the Portuguese Inquisition in Europe.

Chapter 3 begins with the dawn of the Inquisition in India, and Chapter 4 contains a discussion of Charles Dellon's 1687 account of the Inquisition. The chapters describe the wars that led to the establishment of Portuguese colonial rule in Goa and the massacres during the war. Subsequent chapters in Part I describe the forced conversion of Hindus to Christianity by the Inquisitors and the development of the policy of persecuting unbelievers in India. The book describes the organization and procedures of the Inquisition and the anti-Hindu laws that were enacted in Goa during the Inquisition, such as: B. the prohibitions of religious ceremonies and customs of the Hindus, as well as the treatment of the Hindus as second class citizens. Chapter 9 discusses the various methods of torture used on Hindus, Muslims and Jews during the Inquisition. Chapter 10 discusses the jurisdiction and authority of the Inquisition of Goa.

Part II treats the accounts of the Inquisition of Dellon and the Scottish missionary Claudius Buchanan from 1808 in two separate chapters.
