Charles Dellon

Charles Claude Gabriel Dellon (born around 1649 ; died around 1709 ) from Agde was a French doctor and traveler to India who gave an important account of the Inquisition in Goa .

Charles Dellon is the author of a travelogue, the French original of which was immediately translated into German, English and Dutch (German under the title: The Never Heard Tyranny and Cruelty Of The Portuguese Inquisition ... ) and the unexpected experiences of the author on his trip to India portrays in the 17th century . In 1674 he became the Governor of Daman for blasphemy accused. He was subjected to the judgment of the Inquisition Court, imprisoned and imprisoned in a Portuguese prison for five years to be released after the trial before the Holy Office in Lisbon . He describes various places he visited, such as Cape Verde , Cape of Good Hope , Ceylon , Mozambique , Madagascar . The work was placed on the index and is said to have partially inspired Voltaire's Candide .
