Dismal Buttress is a mainly ice-free rock massif in the Queen Maud Mountains of the Antarctic Ross Dependency . It rises 5 km northwest of the Roberts Massif on the west side of the head end of the Shackleton Glacier .
Participants in the southern group of the 1961 to 1962 campaign as part of the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition made the designation after a series of setbacks they had to cope with. It is named after Dismal , a lead dog with eight years of experience in the Antarctic, whom the group was forced to kill.
