The giant Antarctic cod ( Dissostichus mawsoni ) is also called Antarctic hake and lives pelagic in the seas around the Antarctic up to the northern border of the Southern Ocean at the Antarctic Convergence at depths of 0 to 1600 meters.

The predatory fish grow to be 1.75 meters long and weigh up to 80 kg. The oldest specimen discovered to date lived 48 years, 99%, however, do not live to be older than 35 years. They are almost monochrome brown in color and otherwise have only a few irregular and incomplete dark transverse bands and a few dark spots.

Together with the black hake ( Dissostichus eleginoides ), this fish has been fished intensively in recent years. The animals are caught on long lines that are around 130 kilometers long and have up to 30,000 hooks. They are now endangered by overfishing .
