Distinguished Gentleman's Ride

The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride (DGR) has been an annual global event for motorcyclists since 2012. Although it 's called a Gentleman's Ride , it's open to all genders.

purpose

The aim is to positively influence the perception of motorcyclists and (since 2013) to promote prostate cancer research (prevention and treatment), and since 2017 also with regard to suicide . The DGR was founded in 2012 by Mark Hawwa from Sydney / Australia, inspired by a photo of Don Drapers (a character from the TV series Mad Men ) in a suit on a classic motorcycle.

It's about appearing in deliberately “fine” clothing and classic motorcycles. For example, participants wear monocles, mustaches (usually glued on), silk vests, tweed suits or costumes. They are expected to show good manners. The motorcycles are usually cafe racers , bobbers, classic or retro machines, scramblers or heavily modified motorcycles (custom bikes) of all kinds. Participation is free of charge, but participants are expected to try to raise money through sponsors.

The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride will u. a. supported by motorcycle manufacturer Triumph Motorcycles , musicians Ronan Keating and Redfoo, and comedian Vic Reeves .

Results

  • In 2012 over 2,500 drivers took part in 64 cities. The success led the organizers to use the event for a good cause in the future.
  • In 2013, over 11,000 drivers in 145 cities took part and raised over US $ 277,000 to advance prostate cancer research.
  • In 2014, 20,000 drivers in over 250 cities in 56 countries raised almost US $ 1.5 million.
  • In 2015, 37,000 drivers in over 400 cities in 79 countries raised more than US $ 2.3 million.
  • In 2016, 57,088 drivers in over 505 cities in 79 countries raised more than US $ 3.6 million.
  • In 2017, before the end of the sprint on October 8, around 90,000 active participants in 581 cities and 95 countries achieved US $ 4.5 million (official notification after the last ride).
