The Dithmarscher Landesmuseum in Meldorf is a regional history museum in Meldorf in the Schleswig-Holstein district of Dithmarschen . The focus of the exhibition is on the regional history of Dithmarschen shortly before the establishment of the so-called peasant republic up to modern times in the 1960s.

exhibition

On 1,600 square meters, the museum presents a regionally anchored collection from the period from the late Middle Ages to the threshold of the present, making the house one of the most important museums in Schleswig-Holstein. The outstanding collection objects include documents and exhibits on the Dithmarsch peasant republic from 1227 to 1559 or objects on everyday culture at the end of the 17th and 18th centuries. Furthermore, the estates of important citizens of Dithmarschen are shown, such as the instruments of the cartographer and explorer Carsten Niebuhr , which he used during his Arab trip (1761–1767), or the reconstructed courtroom of the Norderdithmarscher Landvogt Markus Swin from 1568. Other important exhibits are sumptuous furniture of the 17th to 19th centuries, the ship from 1696 or the large silver collection typical of the west coast, the most representative pieces of which are presented in a functional context. The Modern Times section provides comprehensive information on the history of Dithmarsch during the Nazi era , but also provides insights into small-town life in the 19th and 20th centuries with numerous exhibits on the train station, post office, school, living room, kitchen, hairdresser, record production, radio, Television or local industrial companies. In addition, the complete inventories of a dental practice, an operating room and an early supermarket, as well as those of a pub and a cinema from the 1950s and 1960s are shown.

history

The museum was founded in 1872 by a group of teachers with a focus on arts and crafts . After two years, the museum was taken over by the then Norder- and Süderdithmarschen districts as public sponsors . With the new building from 1896, a museum building was erected for the first time in Schleswig-Holstein ; the floor plan shows a local farmhouse . In 1859, the former Meldorfer School of Academics established the Modern Times department with collections from around 1870 to 1960. The new presentation of the objects on Dithmarsch history took place in the spring of 1997. In an extension from 1924 there are special exhibition rooms and workshops. In 1995 the old museum building and the school of scholars were connected by a modern glass entrance area. From 1931 to 1961, the art historian Alfred Kamphausen was director of the museum.
