The Djebel Chambi ( Arabic جبل الشعانبي Jebel asch-Schaʿānabī ), also known as Djebel ech Chambi or Jabal ash Shaʿnabi , is a mountain range thatculminatesat 1544 meters at the highest point in Tunisia . Themountain range, consistingmainly of limestone , forms part of the Tunisian ridge; it is badly washed out and furrowed from erosion. The massif is located about 17 kilometers (as the crow flies) or 28 kilometers (driving distance) in a north-westerly direction from the city of Kasserine in western central Tunisia near the border with Algeria .

Ascent

An asphalt road leads to an altitude of about 1300 meters; then the path continues on foot over stone scree for around an hour. One of the peaks is marked by a red crescent moon; on others there are radio stations. Since the area of ​​the Djebel Chambi is viewed as a retreat for terrorists, obtaining a permit from the responsible forestry office in Kasserine for an ascent has become difficult.

Flora and fauna

The dominant tree is the Aleppo pine , but holm oaks , rock pears and smaller juniper bushes also occur; In deeper regions (up to about 900 meters) there are also areas with half grass , which is cut and processed into cellulose and paper in a casserole.

The animals here are, for example, the rare Cuvier gazelles , mane jumpers , genets , hyenas , eagles , vultures and peregrine falcons , but also wild boars , foxes and jackals .

The Parc national de Chambi has existed here since 1970 to protect the nature of the massif. Since 1977 the area as is UNESCO - Biosphere Reserve reported.
