The Djebel Orbata ( Arabic جبل عرباطة) is an approx. 60 km long and a maximum of 1165 m high mountain range east of the southern Tunisian town of Gafsa and north of the towns of El Guettar and Bou Omrane .

geography

The arid Djebel Orbata is considered to be the eastern foothills of the Atlas Mountains . It is extended to the northwest by the Djebel Bou Ramli and to the east by the Djebel Bou Hedma .

Ascent

It is possible to climb the summit, but the area is considered unsafe after the Tunisian revolution of 2010/11 and is often controlled by the police and the military.

Nature reserve

About 5750 hectares of the Djebel Orbata are designated as a nature reserve. Aleppo pines , small juniper bushes , cacti and half grass dominate the extremely sparse vegetation . Animal species threatened with extinction are the barbary sheep and the Dorkas gazelle ; also ostriches and North African hedgehogs are sometimes seen.

Attractions

The ruins of a long-abandoned French fort ( Borj Erroumia ) from the late 19th or early 20th century rises on one of the mountain tops .
