The Djebel Selloum is a mountain range with a maximum height of 1,373 m in the south-east of the Tunisian city of Kasserine . The mountain range, consisting mainly of limestone , forms part of the Tunisian ridge ( dorsal ); it is badly washed out and furrowed from erosion.
location
The massif is located about 15 kilometers (as the crow flies) in a south-easterly direction from the city of Kasserine in western central Tunisia near the border with Algeria .
climate
Abundant rainfall occurs only in the winter months November to February; Snowfalls are rare and melt quickly. Nevertheless, depending on the cloudiness, temperatures can drop below 0 ° C at night or in winter; in summer they often reach values of over 40 ° C during the day.
Ascent
An ascent of the mountain range is basically possible. However, since the area of the Djebel Selloum is viewed as a refuge for terrorists, obtaining a permit from the responsible fortress office in Kasserine for an ascent has become difficult. On February 15, 2015, the Tunisian Air Force dropped a number of bombs on suspected terrorist positions.
Flora and fauna
The Djebel Selloum massif is only sparsely forested ( Aleppo pines ); In addition, half grass grows here , which is processed into paper etc. in the casserole. Wild boars, foxes and birds of prey feed on small mammals and lizards and are therefore at the top of the food chain.
