The Djebel Serj ( Arabic جبل السرج; German: 'Sattelberg') is a mountain range at most 1357 m high in northern Tunisia .
location
The approximately 35 km long mountain range of the Djebel Serj is located approximately 20 km (as the crow flies) southeast of the provincial capital Siliana . In front of it is the 1266 m high Djebel Bargou in the northwest . The Barrage Lakhmes reservoir is only about 6 km northwest of the Djebel Serj .
geology
The limestone mountains, which run from southwest to northeast, are one of the numerous eastern foothills of the Atlas Mountains , which in Tunisia are also known as the Dorsal .
Ascent
It is possible to climb the mountain range; however, it is seldom undertaken due to the prevailing heat. There are many grottos and caves in the flanks of the mountain, where bats also find shelter.
Nature reserve
In 2010, around 1720 hectares of the Djebel Serj area were designated as a nature reserve. The predominant plants such as Aleppo pines , Kermes oaks , carob trees and thujas are small or hard-leaved; but there are also around 100 trees of the French maple , which is rare in North Africa . Wild boars and foxes live in the woods ; Jackals and striped hyenas are less common .
