Dmitri Evgenjewitsch Popko ( Russian Дмитрий Евгеньевич Попко , English transcription: Dmitry Popko ; born October 24, 1996 in Saint Petersburg ) is a Kazakh tennis player born in Russia .

Career

Dmitri Popko rarely appeared on the Junior Tour. He played his first tournaments under the Russian flag on the ITF Future Tour in 2011 , before he changed his nationality, like some other Russian tennis players, to Kazakh. He didn't make much progress until 2014, when he reached his first future final that year and won his first title in doubles. He also made his first appearance on the ATP Challenger Tour . At the end of the year he was included in the top 700 of the tennis world rankings.

In 2015 he made progress. He reached eight finals in futures, of which he won half. In addition, he was at the Challenger in Astana for the first time in the semifinals, where he was defeated by the top 100 player Michail Kukuschkin . With place 255, the Kazakh improved by over 400 places compared to the previous year. With four futures titles again in 2016, but no semi-finals at Challengers, Popko could only improve slightly this year. He failed six times in the Challenger quarter-finals.

Popko's best year so far in 2017 began with a semi-final at the Challenger in Burnie , where he lost to Omar Jasika . After three futures titles, he again failed to make it through the semi-finals in Qarshi, Uzbekistan . In October he reached his record high with 178th place in the singles; in doubles he was best in May of the same year with 304th place. In 2017 Popko also played the first of four games so far for the Kazakh Davis Cup team , where he has a score of 4-2. In 2018 he lost to Enrique López Pérez in Punta del Este, Uruguay for the fourth time in a semi-final. From April onwards, he stopped playing tournaments.
